Charcoal Thieves

The activated charcoal in this black soap draws dirt and impurities from skin like nothing else. Some youths who have been using it recently say it helped with their acne.

This soap has been French Milled, which raises the price in some markets, but not here. It means the soap has gone through further processing.

It’s called “Thieves” after some perfumists in the 14th century developed a blend of essential oils they believed kept them from getting the Bubonic Plague while they robbed the dead. (The police promised not to prosecute them if they revealed the secret to their immunity.) Also known as the Black Death, it killed an estimated 50 million people in Europe, 25-60 percent of the population.

Ingredients: Cosmetic-grade activated charcoal; castor, coconut, olive, and palm oils; rainwater, lye; and a proprietary blend of essential oils.
